Summary

CVE-2024-10962 is a high-severity Deserialization of Untrusted Data (CWE-502) vulnerability in Wpvivid Migration\, Backup\, Staging. Its CVSS base score is 8.8 (High).

Operationally, ranked in the top 9.1% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

The Migration, Backup, Staging – WPvivid plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to PHP Object Injection in all versions through 0.9.107. The flaw arises from unsafe deserialization of untrusted input inside the replace_row_data and replace_serialize_data functions located in the staging database copy logic, allowing an attacker to supply a serialized PHP object. No POP chain exists in the plugin itself, but the presence of one from another installed plugin or theme could turn the injection into arbitrary file deletion, sensitive data disclosure, or remote code execution. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 8.8 with network attack vector and no authentication required.

An unauthenticated attacker can trigger the vulnerability by supplying crafted serialized data to the affected functions; however, the exploit path only activates when an administrator initiates creation of a staging site, at which point the deserialization occurs. Successful exploitation therefore depends on both the attacker reaching the staging endpoints and the target site having a usable POP chain from additional software.

Public references include the WordPress plugin Trac changeset 3186082 that patched the two functions, along with the Wordfence advisory that details the affected code locations and confirms the fix is now available in the plugin repository.

The EPSS score has remained flat at 0.06 since disclosure, indicating no material increase in observed exploitation interest.

attackers to inject a PHP Object. No known POP chain is present in the vulnerable software. If a POP chain is present via an additional plugin or theme installed on the target system, it could allow the attacker to delete arbitrary files, retrieve sensitive data, or execute code. An administrator must create a staging site to trigger the exploit.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.

addresses: CWE-502

Penetration testing supplies malicious serialized objects, detecting unsafe deserialization and supporting corrective actions.

addresses: CWE-502

Evaluation of untrusted data handling (deserialization testing) reveals unsafe processing, which the required remediation process addresses.

addresses: CWE-502

Untrusted serialized data can be deserialized and observed inside the chamber, blocking gadget-chain exploitation outside the sandbox.

addresses: CWE-502

Validates or rejects untrusted serialized data before deserialization occurs.

addresses: CWE-502

Identifies and blocks malicious code introduced through deserialization of untrusted data at system boundaries.

addresses: CWE-502

Integrity verification of serialized information can detect tampering before deserialization occurs.

addresses: CWE-502

Provenance of associated data allows detection of untrusted sources before deserialization or processing occurs.
