Published: 11 October 2024
Summary
CVE-2024-42640 is a critical-severity Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type (CWE-434) vulnerability in Zyenra (inferred from references). Its CVSS base score is 9.8 (Critical).
Operationally, ranked in the top 0.4% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
CVE-2024-42640 is an unauthenticated remote code execution flaw in the angular-base64-upload package prior to version 0.1.21. The issue resides in demo/server.php and stems from unrestricted file upload handling (CWE-434), allowing arbitrary content to be written to the server and later retrieved via the demo/uploads path. The vulnerability carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.8 and affects only products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.
Remote attackers can exploit the flaw over the network without authentication, privileges, or user interaction. Successful exploitation permits upload of malicious files that are subsequently executed on the server, granting arbitrary code execution and full control of the affected system.
Public references consist of the upstream GitHub repository and a technical write-up that reproduces the upload and execution steps. No vendor patches are referenced because the maintainer has discontinued support for the affected versions.
The associated EPSS score is currently 0.8919, matching its recorded peak and reflecting substantial exploitation interest.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Requiring identifiable owners for portable devices reduces the attack surface for unrestricted uploads of dangerous file types via anonymous media.
Dangerous file uploads can be detonated in the chamber to determine malice before any production write or execution occurs.
Prevents unrestricted writing of arbitrary or malicious firmware by keeping hardware write-protect enabled except under tightly controlled manual procedures.
Scans files from external sources on download/open/execute, blocking unrestricted uploads of dangerous file types.
