CVE-2024-55637
Published: 10 December 2024
Summary
CVE-2024-55637 is a critical-severity Improperly Controlled Modification of Dynamically-Determined Object Attributes (CWE-915) vulnerability in Drupal Drupal. Its CVSS base score is 9.8 (Critical).
Operationally, ranked in the top 6.8% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
CVE-2024-55637 is a Deserialization of Untrusted Data vulnerability in Drupal Core that permits object injection. It affects Drupal Core versions from 8.0.0 before 10.2.11, from 10.3.0 before 10.3.9, and from 11.0.0 before 11.0.8. The core contains a gadget chain that becomes exploitable when an insecure deserialization flaw is also present, though the chain itself does not constitute a direct threat.
An unauthenticated remote attacker can supply crafted serialized data to trigger the gadget chain and achieve remote code execution, resulting in full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability as reflected in the CVSS 9.8 score.
The advisory at https://www.drupal.org/sa-core-2024-007 addresses the issue by urging sites to upgrade to the fixed releases 10.2.11, 10.3.9, or 11.0.8. The EPSS score has remained flat at 0.0998 with no material increase after disclosure.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Penetration testing supplies malicious serialized objects, detecting unsafe deserialization and supporting corrective actions.
Evaluation of untrusted data handling (deserialization testing) reveals unsafe processing, which the required remediation process addresses.
Untrusted serialized data can be deserialized and observed inside the chamber, blocking gadget-chain exploitation outside the sandbox.
Validates or rejects untrusted serialized data before deserialization occurs.
Identifies and blocks malicious code introduced through deserialization of untrusted data at system boundaries.
Integrity verification of serialized information can detect tampering before deserialization occurs.
Provenance of associated data allows detection of untrusted sources before deserialization or processing occurs.
