Summary

CVE-2024-5579 is a high-severity Deserialization of Untrusted Data (CWE-502) vulnerability in Alltena Allegra. Its CVSS base score is 7.2 (High).

Operationally, ranked in the top 6.4% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

Allegra contains a deserialization of untrusted data vulnerability in the renderFieldMatch method that permits remote code execution. The flaw stems from insufficient validation of user-supplied input, allowing an authenticated attacker to supply a malicious serialized object that is deserialized without safeguards. Affected installations run the code in the context of the LOCAL SERVICE account, and the issue was originally reported as ZDI-CAN-23451.

An attacker must possess valid credentials with administrative privileges to reach the vulnerable method over the network. Successful exploitation grants arbitrary code execution on the server, enabling full compromise of the application and underlying host. The CVSS 3.0 base score of 7.2 reflects the high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability combined with the requirement for high-privileged authentication.

The vendor addressed the issue in Allegra version 7.5.2, as noted in the corresponding release notes, and the Zero Day Initiative published advisory ZDI-24-1162 with additional technical detail. The EPSS score has remained flat at 0.1101 with no observed increase after disclosure.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.

addresses: CWE-502

Penetration testing supplies malicious serialized objects, detecting unsafe deserialization and supporting corrective actions.

addresses: CWE-502

Evaluation of untrusted data handling (deserialization testing) reveals unsafe processing, which the required remediation process addresses.

addresses: CWE-502

Untrusted serialized data can be deserialized and observed inside the chamber, blocking gadget-chain exploitation outside the sandbox.

addresses: CWE-502

Validates or rejects untrusted serialized data before deserialization occurs.

addresses: CWE-502

Identifies and blocks malicious code introduced through deserialization of untrusted data at system boundaries.

addresses: CWE-502

Integrity verification of serialized information can detect tampering before deserialization occurs.

addresses: CWE-502

Provenance of associated data allows detection of untrusted sources before deserialization or processing occurs.
