Summary

CVE-2024-5989 is a critical-severity Improper Input Validation (CWE-20) vulnerability in Rockwellautomation Thinmanager. Its CVSS base score is 9.3 (Critical).

Operationally, ranked in the top 10.3% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

CVE-2024-5989 is an improper input validation flaw that permits SQL injection leading to remote code execution in Rockwell Automation ThinManager ThinServer. The affected component accepts unauthenticated network messages that an attacker can craft to execute arbitrary SQL statements within the ThinServer process, resulting in full compromise of the host.

An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit the issue over the network without credentials or user interaction. Successful exploitation grants the ability to execute arbitrary code, with high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the ThinServer system.

The vendor has published advisory SD1677 detailing the issue and available mitigations. The current EPSS score of 0.0483, with a modest peak of 0.0534, indicates limited observed exploitation interest to date.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.

addresses: CWE-20

Security testing and developer training directly verify and enforce proper input validation, reducing exploitability of injection and malformed-data weaknesses.

addresses: CWE-20

Security testing and evaluation at multiple SDLC stages directly detects missing or flawed input validation, with the required remediation process ensuring fixes are applied.

addresses: CWE-20

Directly implements checks on information inputs to reject invalid data before processing.

addresses: CWE-20

Spam protection mechanisms perform filtering and detection on inbound/outbound messages, directly compensating for missing or weak input validation of unsolicited content.
