Deeper analysis

CVE-2024-8808 is a command injection vulnerability in Cohesive Networks VNS3 that permits remote code execution. The flaw resides in the product's web service, which listens on TCP port 8000 by default, and stems from insufficient validation of a user-supplied string before it is passed to a system call. Successful exploitation grants code execution in the context of the root user. The issue is tracked as ZDI-CAN-24177 and carries a CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.8 with CWE-78.

An authenticated remote attacker can supply a crafted string through the web interface to trigger arbitrary command execution on affected VNS3 installations. No user interaction is required beyond valid credentials, and the attack can be performed over the network with low complexity.

Vendor guidance and the corresponding Zero Day Initiative advisory are available at the Cohesive Networks security responses page and the ZDI-24-1232 advisory, respectively. The EPSS score remains flat at 0.0609 with no material increase observed after disclosure.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.

addresses: CWE-78

Platform-independent apps typically execute inside a managed runtime or sandbox that restricts direct OS command execution, reducing the ability to exploit OS command injection.

addresses: CWE-78

Validates inputs to block special elements that would alter OS command execution.
