Summary

CVE-2024-9634 is a critical-severity Deserialization of Untrusted Data (CWE-502) vulnerability in Givewp Givewp. Its CVSS base score is 9.8 (Critical).

Operationally, ranked in the top 4.0% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

The GiveWP Donation Plugin and Fundraising Platform for WordPress is affected by a PHP Object Injection vulnerability (CWE-502) in all versions through 3.16.3. The flaw stems from unsafe deserialization of untrusted input supplied in the give_company_name parameter, which is processed in DonationRepository.php and related donation-handling code. When a suitable property-oriented programming (POP) chain is present, the injection leads directly to remote code execution.

Unauthenticated attackers can exploit the issue over the network by submitting a crafted donation request containing a serialized PHP object. Successful exploitation grants the attacker full control over the target WordPress site, including the ability to execute arbitrary code, read or modify data, and pivot within the hosting environment. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.8 reflects the absence of required authentication, user interaction, or special conditions.

The referenced Wordfence advisory and WordPress plugin changeset indicate that the issue was resolved in version 3.16.4 by updating the donation-processing logic in process-donation.php to prevent untrusted deserialization. Site administrators should upgrade immediately and verify that no custom code reintroduces similar object-injection paths. The EPSS score reached a peak of 0.2641 after disclosure before settling at 0.2278, indicating sustained but not explosive interest from attackers.

Mitigating Controls

Likely Mitigating Controls AI

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.

addresses: CWE-502

Penetration testing supplies malicious serialized objects, detecting unsafe deserialization and supporting corrective actions.

addresses: CWE-502

Evaluation of untrusted data handling (deserialization testing) reveals unsafe processing, which the required remediation process addresses.

addresses: CWE-502

Untrusted serialized data can be deserialized and observed inside the chamber, blocking gadget-chain exploitation outside the sandbox.

addresses: CWE-502

Validates or rejects untrusted serialized data before deserialization occurs.

addresses: CWE-502

Identifies and blocks malicious code introduced through deserialization of untrusted data at system boundaries.

addresses: CWE-502

Integrity verification of serialized information can detect tampering before deserialization occurs.

addresses: CWE-502

Provenance of associated data allows detection of untrusted sources before deserialization or processing occurs.
