Summary

CVE-2026-102823 is a high-severity Improper Input Validation (CWE-20) vulnerability. Its CVSS base score is 7.5 (High).

Operationally, ranked at the 17th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to SI-10 (Information Input Validation) and SA-11 (Developer Testing and Evaluation) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

Vulnerability Data

Russh is a Rust SSH client and server library. Prior to 0.63.1, client_read_authenticated in russh/src/client/encrypted.rs forwards CHANNEL_DATA, CHANNEL_EXTENDED_DATA, CHANNEL_EOF, CHANNEL_CLOSE, CHANNEL_OPEN_FAILURE, CHANNEL_SUCCESS, CHANNEL_FAILURE, and CHANNEL_REQUEST subtypes exit-status, exit-signal, and xon-xoff to public client::Handler callbacks without confirming that the ChannelId belongs…

to a channel the client opened and established. A malicious SSH server can send lifecycle events for predicted, unopened, unconfirmed, or released channel identifiers, causing application panics or corrupting command completion and exit-code tracking. This issue is fixed in version 0.63.1.

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI

Owner ruled HOLDS/full (ruling 4), REVISED same day to mostly on independent second assessment (rulings 6-7): CWE-20's class includes semantic and context-dependent validation failures that boundary validation cannot see, so full overstates the ceiling; prefer-lower. Full ruling history kept. Instrument divergence: replicate 1/2 early-stopped, the one holder graded mostly.

Developer testing and evaluation can discover missing input validation through analysis or test cases.

Requiring documented development standards and tools can embed input-validation practices into the engineering process.

finds

Testing against a defined set of requirements and using code review plus vulnerability scanning forces validation of inputs and handling of unanticipated conditions, reducing the chance that malformed data will be accepted.

prevents

Requiring language-specific secure coding standards, peer review, SAST and documented mitigation of common programming errors forces validation of all inputs before they are trusted.

Hardening callouts derived

DISA STIG baselines are authored against specific weaknesses. Where this CVE cites a broad weakness class, the mapping is not asserted at that abstraction (owner ruling, 2026-09-25: grade only at Base and below), so no rule is shown here rather than a rule shown against the wrong grain.

  • No fine-grained STIG row for CWE-20, a class-level weakness, and none of its children carries one either.
