Vulnerability Data

A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) and Cisco ISE Passive Identity Connector (ISE-PIC) could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks against a user of the interface. This vulnerability…

more

is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input by the web-based management interface of an affected system. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by injecting malicious code into specific pages of the interface. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary script code in the context of the affected interface or access sensitive, browser-based information. To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have valid administrative credentials.

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI

Developer testing and evaluation can discover missing or incorrect neutralization of script tags through targeted XSS test cases.

Input validation explicitly requires checking and neutralizing untrusted web inputs containing script-related characters before they reach a downstream renderer.

Secure engineering principles include mandatory output encoding and neutralization of HTML metacharacters to stop injection at the source.

finds

Security testing in development catches unneutralized script tags before release.

prevents

Secure SDLC mandates input validation and output encoding that directly prevent basic XSS.

prevents

Application security requirements explicitly call for neutralization of script-related HTML tags.
