Summary

CVE-2026-45133 is a high-severity Uncontrolled Recursion (CWE-674) vulnerability in Sensiolabs Symfony. Its CVSS base score is 8.2 (High).

Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique Endpoint Denial of Service (T1499); ranked in the top 49% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to CM-6 (Configuration Settings) and SA-11 (Developer Testing and Evaluation) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

Vulnerability Data

Symfony is a PHP framework for web and console applications and a set of reusable PHP components. Prior to 5.4.52, 6.4.40, 7.4.12, and 8.0.12, when the parser is exposed to attacker-controlled input, deeply nested mappings or sequences cause both the…

block-level (Parser::parseBlock()) and inline (Inline::parseSequence() / Inline::parseMapping()) parsers to recurse without a depth limit. A crafted document exhausts the PHP stack and crashes the worker. This issue is fixed in versions 5.4.52, 6.4.40, 7.4.12, and 8.0.12.

Mitigating Controls

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI

Secure configuration settings can disable DTD processing or cap entity expansion in XML parsers.

Developer testing and evaluation can discover inefficient regex patterns via performance or static analysis.

Input validation can reject or constrain data that would otherwise drive unbounded recursive calls.

Least-functionality configuration can prohibit unsafe DTD features or external entity resolution.

Development standards and tools can require safe regex construction and forbid known exponential patterns.

DoS protection mechanisms limit the resource-exhaustion impact of uncontrolled recursion without eliminating the flaw.
