Deeper analysis
CVE-2023-31478 is an information-disclosure vulnerability affecting GL.iNet network devices running firmware versions prior to 3.216. An unauthenticated API endpoint exposes the Wi-Fi configuration, including the network SSID and pre-shared key, without requiring any credentials or user interaction.
An attacker with network reachability to an affected device can query the endpoint and retrieve the Wi-Fi credentials in plaintext. Successful exploitation yields the ability to join the wireless network or to impersonate the access point, directly impacting confidentiality while leaving integrity and availability untouched.
Vendor references indicate that the issue is resolved in firmware 3.216 and later releases; administrators are therefore advised to upgrade affected devices promptly. The associated EPSS score remains elevated near its recorded peak of 0.8676, indicating sustained exploitation interest after public disclosure.
