Published: 01 August 2023
Summary
CVE-2023-4050 is a high-severity Out-of-bounds Write (CWE-787) vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox. Its CVSS base score is 7.5 (High).
Operationally, ranked in the top 11.9% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
In some cases, an untrusted input stream was copied to a stack buffer without checking its size in Firefox. This out-of-bounds write vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2023-4050 and assigned CWE-787, affects Firefox versions prior to 116 as well as ESR releases before 102.14 and 115.1. The flaw produces a potentially exploitable crash and carries a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.5 reflecting network attack vector, low complexity, and high availability impact.
An unauthenticated remote attacker can supply a malicious input stream over the network to trigger the crash. Successful exploitation could allow a sandbox escape in addition to denial-of-service effects, although the CVSS vector records no direct confidentiality or integrity loss.
Mozilla’s bug tracker and subsequent Debian security advisories (DSA-5464, DSA-5469, and related LTS lists) direct users to apply the fixed Firefox packages. The associated EPSS score rose from a low baseline to a peak of 0.1012 before receding to its current value of 0.0362, indicating a period of increased exploitation interest after disclosure.
