CVE-2024-5335
Published: 21 August 2024
Summary
CVE-2024-5335 is a critical-severity Deserialization of Untrusted Data (CWE-502) vulnerability in Bdthemes Ultimate Store Kit. Its CVSS base score is 9.8 (Critical).
Operationally, ranked in the top 5.7% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
The Ultimate Store Kit Elementor Addons plugin for WordPress, which provides WooCommerce and EDD builder functionality including product grids and tables, is affected by a PHP Object Injection vulnerability. The flaw stems from unsafe deserialization of untrusted input in the _ultimate_store_kit_compare_products cookie, present in all versions through 1.6.4 and tracked under CWE-502.
An unauthenticated remote attacker can supply a crafted serialized object via the cookie to trigger the injection. While the plugin itself contains no POP chain, the presence of a suitable chain from another installed plugin or theme on the target site could enable deletion of arbitrary files, disclosure of sensitive data, or arbitrary code execution, consistent with the CVSS 9.8 rating.
Public references from Wordfence and the plugin's Trac repository indicate that the issue was addressed by sanitizing the cookie input in changeset 3135472; site owners should apply the corresponding update that supersedes version 1.6.4. The EPSS score has remained flat at 0.1339 with no material increase since disclosure.

and including, 1.6.4. This makes it possible for an unauthenticated attacker to inject a PHP Object. No POP chain is present in the vulnerable plugin. If a POP chain is present via an additional plugin or theme installed on the target system, it could allow the attacker or above to delete arbitrary files, retrieve sensitive data, or execute code.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Penetration testing supplies malicious serialized objects, detecting unsafe deserialization and supporting corrective actions.
Evaluation of untrusted data handling (deserialization testing) reveals unsafe processing, which the required remediation process addresses.
Untrusted serialized data can be deserialized and observed inside the chamber, blocking gadget-chain exploitation outside the sandbox.
Validates or rejects untrusted serialized data before deserialization occurs.
Identifies and blocks malicious code introduced through deserialization of untrusted data at system boundaries.
Integrity verification of serialized information can detect tampering before deserialization occurs.
Provenance of associated data allows detection of untrusted sources before deserialization or processing occurs.
