CVE-2024-8129
Published: 24 August 2024
Summary
CVE-2024-8129 is a medium-severity Command Injection (CWE-77) vulnerability in Dlink Dns-1550-04 Firmware. Its CVSS base score is 5.3 (Medium).
Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique Unix Shell (T1059.004); ranked in the top 4.9% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog; a public proof-of-concept is referenced.
Deeper analysis
A command injection vulnerability exists in multiple end-of-life D-Link NAS products including the DNS-120, DNR-202L, DNS-315L, DNS-320 series, DNS-327L, DNS-340L, DNS-345, and DNS-1550-04. The flaw resides in the cgi_s3_modify function within /cgi-bin/s3.cgi of the HTTP POST Request Handler; unsanitized input to the f_job_name argument allows arbitrary command execution. The issue affects all firmware versions up to 20240814 and was assigned CWE-77 and CWE-78.
An attacker with network access and valid credentials can send a crafted HTTP POST request to the affected CGI endpoint, resulting in remote command injection. The public exploit disclosure demonstrates that successful exploitation grants the ability to execute operating-system commands on the device.
D-Link’s security advisory SAP10383 and associated vendor statements confirm the products are beyond end-of-life support, explicitly advising retirement and replacement rather than patching. No firmware updates are available.
The EPSS score stands at 0.1701 with no subsequent increase reported after disclosure.

of the file /cgi-bin/s3.cgi of the component HTTP POST Request Handler. The manipulation of the argument f_job_name leads to command injection. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. NOTE: This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer. NOTE: Vendor was contacted early and confirmed that the product is end-of-life. It should be retired and replaced.
