Deeper analysis
The Simple User Registration plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to privilege escalation in all versions through 6.3. The flaw stems from insufficient restrictions on user meta values that can be supplied during the registration process, which allows an attacker to assign administrator-level capabilities to a newly created account. The issue is tracked as CWE-269 and carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.8.
Unauthenticated attackers can exploit the vulnerability over the network by submitting a crafted registration request that includes elevated role or capability values in the user meta. Successful exploitation results in the creation of an administrator account, granting the attacker full control over the WordPress site without any prior authentication or user interaction.
Public references point to a code-level fix committed in changeset 3327946 and to a detailed advisory published by Wordfence that describes the affected registration logic in class.register.php. Site owners are expected to apply the vendor patch or remove the plugin until an update is installed.
The EPSS score for this CVE rose from a low baseline to a peak of 0.3477 with a current value of 0.2812, indicating that exploitation interest increased after disclosure.
