Summary

CVE-2026-105786 is a high-severity Missing Authentication for Critical Function (CWE-306) vulnerability. Its CVSS base score is 8.5 (High).

Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique External Remote Services (T1133); ranked at the 20th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to AC-14 (Permitted Actions Without Identification or Authentication) and AC-24 (Access Control Decisions) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

Vulnerability Data

Joplin is an open source note-taking and to-do application that organises notes and lists into notebooks. Prior to 3.7.13, packages/server/src/models/ApplicationModel.ts accepts a caller-chosen application authorization identifier, applications/:id/confirm binds that identifier to a logged-in user through a generic consent page, and…

more

the public packages/server/src/routes/api/application_auth.ts endpoint passes it to ApplicationModel.createAppPassword without authenticating or binding the redeemer. An attacker can cause a victim to approve the attacker's identifier, redeem a durable application ID and password, and exchange the credential for a victim session with full read and write access to synchronized data. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.7.13.

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI

Explicitly identifies and limits actions permitted without authentication, preventing critical functions from being exposed.

AC-24 ensures access-control decisions are made and applied consistently, reducing the chance of an incorrect authorization result.

A reference monitor that is always invoked and tamper-proof forces every authorization decision through a verified, correct path.

Access enforcement requires prior authentication before any authorization decision for critical functions.

Directly mandates unique identification and authentication of users before access to functions requiring identity.

Extends the same authentication requirement to non-organizational users accessing critical functionality.

PR.AA-01 partial match
blocks

Managing identities and credentials is a prerequisite for authentication but does not itself enforce it on critical functions.

PR.AA-03 partial match
blocks

Directly requires authentication of users/services/hardware, which eliminates missing authentication for critical functions.

PR.AA-05 partial match
blocks

Defining and enforcing authorizations assumes prior authentication and therefore only partially mitigates the absence of authentication.

PR.IR-01 partial match
blocks

Protecting networks from unauthorized access can be undermined by missing authentication but does not address the root authentication gap.
