Vulnerability details

WWBN AVideo is an open source video platform. In versions up to and including 29.0, plugin/CloneSite/cloneClient.json.php echoes the local CloneSite shared secret ($objClone->myKey, a constant md5($global['systemRootPath'] . $global['salt'])) into the HTTP response body on every unauthenticated request. The unauthenticated error…

branch was intended to reject non-admin callers without a valid key, but the rejection message interpolates the expected key before die(). When the victim has CloneSite configured with a remote cloneSiteURL (standard federation/backup setup), the leaked myKey is exactly the credential that authenticates the victim to that remote server's cloneServer.json.php, allowing the attacker to impersonate the victim and trigger a full mysqldump of the remote's database to the remote's public videos/clones/ directory Commit e6566f56a28f4556b2a0a09d03717a719dcb49da contains an updated fix.

T1190 Exploit Public-Facing Application Initial Access
Adversaries may attempt to exploit a weakness in an Internet-facing host or system to initially access a network.
T1552 Unsecured Credentials Credential Access
Adversaries may search compromised systems to find and obtain insecurely stored credentials.
Why these techniques?

Public-facing web plugin leaks shared secret credential via error response (CWE-209), directly enabling exploitation of the app and subsequent use of stolen credentials for remote DB access.

Mitigating Controls

Likely Mitigating Controls AI

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.

addresses: CWE-209

Detects error messages that leak sensitive information as evidence of disclosure.

addresses: CWE-209

The control directly mitigates generation of error messages containing sensitive authentication details by requiring obscured feedback instead of verbose responses.

addresses: CWE-209

Misdirection allows generation of misleading error messages that withhold or falsify sensitive details.

addresses: CWE-209

Explicitly requires error messages to avoid including sensitive or exploitable details while still supporting corrective action.

addresses: CWE-209

Validation ensures error messages contain only expected, non-sensitive content and blocks leakage via verbose errors.

addresses: CWE-209

Fail-safe procedures can be defined to suppress or sanitize error output, reducing generation of messages that contain sensitive information.
