Summary

CVE-2026-54618 is a critical-severity Missing Authentication for Critical Function (CWE-306) vulnerability. Its CVSS base score is 9.4 (Critical).

Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique Remote Services (T1021); ranked at the 41th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

This vulnerability is AI-related — categorised as AI Agent Protocols and Integrations; in the Protocol-Specific Risks risk domain.

The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to AC-14 (Permitted Actions Without Identification or Authentication) and AC-3 (Access Enforcement) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

Vulnerability Data

Obsidian Web MCP is a secure remote MCP server for Obsidian vaults. Prior to 0.2.0, /oauth/authorize issues an authorization code without a login, consent, or session check, and /oauth/token can exchange that code for the static VAULT_MCP_TOKEN without authenticating a…

client. An unauthenticated remote caller who can reach the intended tunnel deployment can therefore call /mcp and use vault_read, vault_write, vault_search, vault_list, vault_move, and vault_delete against the entire vault. Optional PKCE does not prevent an attacker-initiated flow, and unauthenticated /oauth/register also exposes a client_credentials path by returning the configured VAULT_OAUTH_CLIENT_SECRET. This issue is fixed in version 0.2.0.

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI

Explicitly identifies and limits actions permitted without authentication, preventing critical functions from being exposed.

Access enforcement requires prior authentication before any authorization decision for critical functions.

Information flow enforcement can restrict redirects to only approved/trusted destinations, stopping untrusted user-supplied URLs from being followed.

Directly mandates unique identification and authentication of users before access to functions requiring identity.

Authenticator management requires secure generation, storage, and distribution of credentials, directly stopping insecure methods.

Extends the same authentication requirement to non-organizational users accessing critical functionality.

PR.AA-01 partial match
prevents

Managing identities and credentials is a prerequisite for authentication but does not itself enforce it on critical functions.

PR.AA-03 partial match
prevents

Directly requires authentication of users/services/hardware, which eliminates missing authentication for critical functions.

PR.AA-04 partial match
prevents

Protecting identity assertions covers conveyance of credentials but is narrower than full credential lifecycle protection.

PR.AA-05 partial match
prevents

Defining and enforcing authorizations assumes prior authentication and therefore only partially mitigates the absence of authentication.

PR.DS-01 partial match
prevents

Encrypting data-at-rest fully prevents insecure credential storage while only partially satisfying the broader data-protection outcome.

PR.DS-02 partial match
prevents

Encrypting data-in-transit fully prevents interception of credentials in motion while only partially satisfying the broader data-protection outcome.

Mitigating Controls (ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Annex A) AI

prevents

Acceptable-use expectations that cover protection of credentials and information assets throughout their lifecycle discourage practices that expose or mishandle authentication material.

prevents

Requiring protected storage, transmission, and non-display of passwords prevents credentials from being stored or sent in clear text where they can be harvested by unauthorized actors.

prevents

Mandating authentication requirements for critical functions at the requirements-gathering stage ensures that essential operations are not left unprotected by missing login or verification mechanisms.

prevents

Contractual clauses that survive termination help ensure that credentials and other secrets are not retained or misused after employment ends.

prevents

Regular reminders about password security and personal accountability make users less likely to store or transmit credentials in cleartext or other unprotected forms.

mitigates

By requiring signatories to protect credentials and other authentication material under the same confidentiality terms, the control discourages the mishandling or exposure of credentials that could lead to unauthorized account access.
