Summary
CVE-2026-82434 is a critical-severity Insufficiently Protected Credentials (CWE-522) vulnerability in Apache Storm (inferred from references). Its CVSS base score is 10.0 (Critical).
Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique LSASS Memory (T1003.001); ranked at the 42th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to IA-5 (Authenticator Management) and SC-28 (Protection of Information at Rest) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

Vulnerability Data
Description When ZooKeeper authentication is configured, Storm deliberately retains `storm.zookeeper.topology.auth.payload` in the topology configuration, because workers need it. Nimbus then served that configuration verbatim to any caller holding read-only topology permissions, so a user whose only grant was the ability…

to view a topology received its ZooKeeper credential. That credential is not read-only. The cluster state implementation uses write-capable ACLs for worker heartbeats, backpressure and error state, so a recipient can forge or remove that state for the topology concerned. It is not a write credential on assignments. The same advisory covers the submission client, which logged the generated payload at INFO on every submission that generated one, and the SASL handlers, which logged it at DEBUG. The credential therefore also reached any log aggregation or support bundle collected from the cluster. Mitigation Upgrade to 3.1.0, where the payload is removed from the configuration served to read-only callers and is no longer written to logs. Users who cannot upgrade immediately should rotate `storm.zookeeper.topology.auth.payload` for existing topologies, review retained logs and support bundles for the value, and restrict read-only topology permissions to trusted principals. Mitigating Controls
Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI
Authenticator management requires secure generation, storage, and distribution of credentials, directly stopping insecure methods.
Protection of information at rest requires encryption or equivalent safeguards for stored credentials.
Transmission confidentiality and integrity enforcement stops credentials from being sent in plaintext or without protection.
Mitigating Controls (NIST CSF 2.0) AI
Derived directly from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry via our AI-authored CWE→CSF cross-walk (authority under review) — links open the control.
Log generation configuration can and should exclude sensitive data, but the control statement focuses on availability rather than content filtering.
Secure SDLC practices directly prohibit writing sensitive data to logs; eliminating the weakness satisfies only one narrow slice of the control.

A.5.10 only requires awareness, a topic-specific acceptable-use policy stating expected behaviours/monitoring, and procedures referencing other controls (e.g. access restrictions, marking, disposal); it performs none of the verb on CWE-522's insecure credential transmission/storage, which requires technical protections like encryption or secure channels that this governance clause does not supply.
A.5.17 mandates secure allocation, transmission, storage, hashing/encryption per 8.24, strong non-reusable passwords, immediate change of defaults/compromise, and no cleartext — directly stopping exploitation of insufficiently protected credentials with only a bounded remainder (e.g. non-password authenticators or post-storage exposure vectors outside its scope).

DISA STIG baselines are authored against specific weaknesses. Where this CVE cites a broad weakness class, the mapping is not asserted at that abstraction (owner ruling, 2026-09-25: grade only at Base and below), so no rule is shown here rather than a rule shown against the wrong grain.
