Vulnerability Data
PJSIP is a free and open source multimedia communication library written in C. In 2.17 and earlier, the OpenSSL and GnuTLS backends in pjlib/src/pj/ssl_sock_ossl.c and pjlib/src/pj/ssl_sock_gtls.c copy DNS SubjectAltName values with string functions that recalculate their length and truncate an…

embedded NUL byte. With server verification enabled through --tls-verify-server for the PJSIP TLS/SIPS transport, a certificate containing a DNS SubjectAltName formed from the target hostname prefix followed by an embedded NUL and an attacker-controlled suffix can therefore be accepted for the prefix hostname. An attacker who possesses such a certificate from a trusted issuer and can intercept the connection can impersonate the target server, complete the SIP session, and receive REGISTER credentials. The mbedTLS backend is not affected because it preserves the explicit string length. No fixed version is available as of this review.

Likely Mitigating Controls AI
Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Mandates approved trust anchors and issuance policies, directly preventing acceptance of unvalidated or untrusted certificates.
When certificates are used to establish component provenance, the control requires correct certificate validation procedures.
Correct system time is required for proper enforcement of certificate notBefore/notAfter dates and time-based revocation checks.
Mitigating Controls (NIST CSF 2.0) AI
Derived directly from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry via our AI-authored CWE→CSF cross-walk (authority under review) — links open the control.
Assessing authenticity/integrity of acquired software often relies on code-signing certificate validation.
Certificate-based authentication of users/services/hardware directly depends on correct validation.
Identity assertions conveyed via certificates require validation to be verified.
Proper certificate validation is a core mechanism for protecting data-in-transit confidentiality and integrity.
Secure development practices explicitly include implementing correct certificate validation logic.
Mitigating Controls (ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Annex A) AI
Derived directly from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry via our AI-authored CWE→ISO cross-walk (authority under review) — links open the control.
Network security controls include certificate validation and host-name verification to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks.
Security of network services requires proper TLS configuration and certificate validation for service endpoints.
Requiring issuance and validation of public-key certificates under an approved policy reduces the chance that certificates with improper validation will be trusted.
Application security requirements include secure communication and certificate validation for external services.
Secure system architecture principles require proper certificate validation to protect communications.
Secure coding practices include implementing proper certificate and hostname validation in code.
