Summary

CVE-2024-44102 is a critical-severity Deserialization of Untrusted Data (CWE-502) vulnerability in Siemens Telecontrol Server Basic. Its CVSS base score is 10.0 (Critical).

Operationally, ranked in the top 7.3% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

A critical deserialization vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2024-44102 and assigned CWE-502, affects multiple versions of Siemens TeleControl Server Basic and PP TeleControl Server Basic (including 8, 32, 64, 256, 1000, and 5000 variants up to V3.1) when redundancy is configured. All listed builds prior to V3.1.2.1 accept user-supplied serialized objects without adequate validation, enabling remote code execution.

An unauthenticated attacker with network access can send a maliciously crafted serialized object to the affected server. Successful exploitation grants arbitrary code execution with SYSTEM privileges on the device, resulting in full control over the telecontrol system.

The Siemens advisory SSA-454789 recommends upgrading to V3.1.2.1 or later for all affected TeleControl Server Basic products to eliminate the insecure deserialization path.

EPSS scores have remained low and stable near 0.09 with no material post-disclosure increase, indicating limited observed exploitation interest to date.

The affected system allows remote users to send maliciously crafted objects. Due to insecure deserialization of user-supplied content by the affected software, an unauthenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a maliciously crafted serialized object. This could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the device with SYSTEM privileges.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.

addresses: CWE-502

Penetration testing supplies malicious serialized objects, detecting unsafe deserialization and supporting corrective actions.

addresses: CWE-502

Evaluation of untrusted data handling (deserialization testing) reveals unsafe processing, which the required remediation process addresses.

addresses: CWE-502

Untrusted serialized data can be deserialized and observed inside the chamber, blocking gadget-chain exploitation outside the sandbox.

addresses: CWE-502

Validates or rejects untrusted serialized data before deserialization occurs.

addresses: CWE-502

Identifies and blocks malicious code introduced through deserialization of untrusted data at system boundaries.

addresses: CWE-502
