Summary

CVE-2024-45290 is a high-severity Absolute Path Traversal (CWE-36) vulnerability in Phpoffice Phpspreadsheet. Its CVSS base score is 7.7 (High).

Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique Exploit Public-Facing Application (T1190); ranked at the 45th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog; a public proof-of-concept is referenced.

The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to AC-4 (Information Flow Enforcement) and SI-10 (Information Input Validation) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

Vulnerability Data

PHPSpreadsheet is a pure PHP library for reading and writing spreadsheet files. It's possible for an attacker to construct an XLSX file which links media from external URLs. When opening the XLSX file, PhpSpreadsheet retrieves the image size and type…

by reading the file contents, if the provided path is a URL. By using specially crafted `php://filter` URLs an attacker can leak the contents of any file or URL. Note that this vulnerability is different from GHSA-w9xv-qf98-ccq4, and resides in a different component. An attacker can access any file on the server, or leak information form arbitrary URLs, potentially exposing sensitive information such as AWS IAM credentials. This issue has been addressed in release versions 1.29.2, 2.1.1, and 2.3.0. All users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI

Information flow enforcement can restrict which destinations the server is allowed to contact on behalf of users.

Input validation directly stops construction of absolute paths from untrusted data before they reach file operations.

Enforced access authorizations can limit which resources are reachable even if a traversal succeeds.

Boundary protection limits the network reach of server-initiated requests even if SSRF occurs.

finds

Security testing in development can detect absolute path traversal via static analysis and fuzzing.

prevents

Operational threat data describing SSRF campaigns can be used to tighten outbound-request allow-lists and detection rules before attackers exploit them.

prevents

Secure development lifecycle includes input validation and path-handling requirements that reduce absolute path traversal risk.

prevents

Application security requirements typically mandate controls against path traversal in file-access functions.

prevents

Secure architecture principles call for canonicalization and sandboxing that limit absolute path traversal.

prevents

Secure coding standards directly require neutralization of absolute path sequences in pathname construction.
