Summary
CVE-2026-16000 is a high-severity Missing Cryptographic Step (CWE-325) vulnerability. Its CVSS base score is 8.7 (High).
Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique Protocol or Service Impersonation (T1001.003); ranked at the 16th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to SA-11 (Developer Testing and Evaluation) and SA-15 (Development Process, Standards, and Tools) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

tags, via messages encrypted without associated data. The cause is that the G1 block, which binds the nonce, the message length and the parameter flags into the CBC-MAC, was processed only when associated data was present. Without associated data the tag was a CBC-MAC of the plaintext alone, independent of the nonce. Only applications that use KCcmBlockCipher directly and supply no associated data are affected.

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI
Mandates developer testing and evaluation that can uncover missing cryptographic steps through functional and penetration testing.
Requires documented development standards and processes that include correct cryptographic algorithm implementation.
Requires selection and implementation of specific approved cryptographic algorithms and methods, reducing the chance that an incomplete algorithm is used.

Derived directly from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry via our AI-authored CWE→CSF cross-walk (authority under review) — links open the control.
Proper encryption of data-at-rest requires all algorithm steps; omitting one directly weakens the control.
Proper encryption of data-in-transit requires all algorithm steps; omitting one directly weakens the control.
Secure SDLC practices explicitly include correct cryptographic algorithm implementation and testing.
