CVE-2026-33720 is a medium-severity Incorrect Authorization (CWE-863) vulnerability in N8N N8N. Its CVSS base score is 6.3 (Medium).
Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique Steal Application Access Token (T1528); ranked at the 8th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to AC-24 (Access Control Decisions) and AC-3 (Access Enforcement) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

Vulnerability Data
n8n is an open source workflow automation platform. Prior to version 2.8.0, when the `N8N_SKIP_AUTH_ON_OAUTH_CALLBACK` environment variable is set to `true`, the OAuth callback handler skips ownership verification of the OAuth state parameter. This allows an attacker to trick a…

victim into completing an OAuth flow against a credential object the attacker controls, causing the victim's OAuth tokens to be stored in the attacker's credential. The attacker can then use those tokens to execute workflows in their name. This issue only affects instances where `N8N_SKIP_AUTH_ON_OAUTH_CALLBACK=true` is explicitly configured (non-default). The issue has been fixed in n8n version 2.8.0. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. If upgrading is not immediately possible, administrators should consider the following temporary mitigations: Avoid enabling `N8N_SKIP_AUTH_ON_OAUTH_CALLBACK=true` unless strictly required, and/ or restrict access to the n8n instance to fully trusted users only. These workarounds do not fully remediate the risk and should only be used as short-term mitigation measures.

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI
Directly enforces ownership verification of the OAuth state parameter and credential binding before storing tokens, preventing the authorization bypass.
Ensures access-control decisions are made using verified attributes (state ownership) rather than skipping checks when the non-default env var is set.
Restricts configuration settings so that N8N_SKIP_AUTH_ON_OAUTH_CALLBACK cannot be enabled, eliminating the code path that omits authorization.

Defining, enforcing, and reviewing access authorizations and least privilege directly prevents incorrect authorization checks.

Requiring consistency between access rights and classification plus formal approval steps ensures that the authorization logic correctly distinguishes between entities that should and should not be granted access.
Enforcing policy-driven approval and role-change reviews stops incorrect or stale authorization decisions from remaining in effect after job changes or terminations.
By tying access rights to identity, device, location and classification, the control reduces the likelihood that an authorization decision will be based on an incorrect or bypassed policy.
