Deeper analysis

CVE-2022-21280 is a vulnerability in the Cluster: General component of Oracle MySQL Cluster. It affects supported versions 7.4.34 and earlier, 7.5.24 and earlier, 7.6.20 and earlier, and 8.0.27 and earlier. The flaw is rated 6.3 under CVSS 3.1 with the vector AV:A/AC:H/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, indicating that successful exploitation can produce full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts on the cluster.

An attacker must possess high privileges and physical access to the communication segment attached to the hardware running MySQL Cluster. Exploitation is further complicated by the need for human interaction from a user other than the attacker, after which the attacker can achieve complete takeover of the MySQL Cluster.

Oracle’s January 2022 Critical Patch Update addresses the issue for affected MySQL Cluster releases, and NetApp has published a corresponding advisory confirming the scope for its products. The Zero Day Initiative also released details on the flaw as ZDI-22-084.

The associated EPSS score has remained flat at 0.1491 with no material increase after disclosure.
