CVE-2022-22978 affects Spring Security versions prior to 5.4.11, 5.5.7, and 5.6.4, along with older unsupported releases. The flaw resides in RegexRequestMatcher, which can be misconfigured on certain servlet containers when a regular expression contains a dot character, allowing an authorization bypass that maps to CWE-863.
An unauthenticated network attacker can send crafted requests that evade intended access-control checks, resulting in full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability as reflected in the CVSS 9.8 score.
