Summary

CVE-2022-27646 is a high-severity Stack-based Buffer Overflow (CWE-121) vulnerability in Netgear R6400 Firmware. Its CVSS base score is 8.8 (High).

Operationally, ranked in the top 5.8% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

CVE-2022-27646 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability, tracked as CWE-121, that affects the circled daemon on NETGEAR R6700v3 routers running firmware version 1.0.4.120_10.0.91. The flaw is triggered when the daemon processes a crafted circleinfo.txt file, enabling an attacker to overwrite memory on the stack and execute arbitrary code.

The vulnerability can be exploited by network-adjacent attackers who first bypass the router's existing authentication mechanism. Successful exploitation grants code execution in the context of the root user, with a CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.8 reflecting the combination of adjacent-network access, low attack complexity, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

NETGEAR's security advisory PSV-2021-0324 and the corresponding Zero Day Initiative report ZDI-22-523 address the issue and direct users to updated firmware that resolves the buffer overflow. The EPSS score has remained flat at 0.1282 with no material increase since disclosure.

Vulnerability details

This vulnerability allows network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of NETGEAR R6700v3 1.0.4.120_10.0.91 routers. Although authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability, the existing authentication mechanism can be bypassed. The specific flaw exists within the circled daemon.…
