Summary

CVE-2022-39291 is a medium-severity Improper Input Validation (CWE-20) vulnerability in Zoneminder Zoneminder. Its CVSS base score is 5.4 (Medium).

Operationally, ranked in the top 8.2% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog; a public proof-of-concept is referenced.

Deeper analysis

ZoneMinder is an open-source CCTV software application affected by an input validation flaw tracked as CVE-2022-39291. Versions prior to the fixes allow any user holding only View system permissions to submit arbitrary log entries through an unauthenticated-rate HTTP POST to the /zm/index.php endpoint, directly writing attacker-controlled data into the application’s logging tables.

An attacker with View privileges can therefore inject large volumes of log data without rate limiting, leading to database performance degradation or exhaustion of available storage. The issue maps to CWE-20 and carries a CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.4, reflecting a network-reachable vector that requires low-privilege credentials but needs no user interaction.

Public advisories and the referenced commits (34ffd92, 73d9f24, cb3fc59, de2866f) direct administrators to upgrade to a patched release; no workarounds are documented. The associated EPSS score has remained low and essentially flat (peak 0.0738, current 0.0716), indicating limited observed exploitation interest after disclosure.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.

addresses: CWE-20

Security testing and developer training directly verify and enforce proper input validation, reducing exploitability of injection and malformed-data weaknesses.

addresses: CWE-20

Security testing and evaluation at multiple SDLC stages directly detects missing or flawed input validation, with the required remediation process ensuring fixes are applied.

addresses: CWE-20

Directly implements checks on information inputs to reject invalid data before processing.

addresses: CWE-20

Spam protection mechanisms perform filtering and detection on inbound/outbound messages, directly compensating for missing or weak input validation of unsolicited content.
