Deeper analysis
D-Link DIR878 routers running firmware version 1.30B08 Hotfix_04 contain a command-injection flaw in the /bin/proc.cgi component. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2022-43184, carries a CVSS v3.1 score of 9.8, and is classified under CWE-78. It allows unauthenticated attackers to supply crafted input that is passed directly to an operating-system command interpreter.
Because the affected CGI endpoint is reachable over the network without credentials, an attacker who can reach the device can execute arbitrary commands with root privileges. Successful exploitation therefore yields full control of the router, including the ability to alter configuration, intercept traffic, or use the device as a pivot point inside the target network.
D-Link has published a security bulletin addressing the issue, and technical details including proof-of-concept material have been disclosed in a public GitHub repository. The EPSS score for this CVE has remained flat at 0.0756 with no material increase observed after publication.
