CVE-2024-41721
Published: 20 September 2024
Summary
CVE-2024-41721 is a high-severity Out-of-bounds Read (CWE-125) vulnerability in Freebsd (inferred from references). Its CVSS base score is 8.1 (High).
Operationally, ranked in the top 10.8% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
An insufficient boundary validation flaw in USB code can trigger an out-of-bounds heap read that may be escalated to an arbitrary write and remote code execution. The issue affects the bhyve hypervisor in FreeBSD, as indicated by the associated vendor advisory, and has also been noted in downstream NetApp products.
A remote attacker can exploit the vulnerability over the network without authentication or user interaction, although the attack complexity is rated high. Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to achieve arbitrary code execution within the affected virtualized environment.
FreeBSD security advisory FreeBSD-SA-24:15.bhyve and NetApp advisory ntap-20240926-0009 address the issue and outline available patches and mitigation steps for affected systems.
The EPSS score rose from a low baseline to a peak of 0.0907 before receding, indicating a period of increased exploitation interest after disclosure.
