Published: 27 July 2024
Summary
CVE-2024-6431 is a high-severity Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type (CWE-434) vulnerability in Wordpress (inferred from references). Its CVSS base score is 8.8 (High).
Operationally, ranked in the top 6.5% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
The Media.net Ads Manager plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file uploads in all versions through 2.10.13. The flaw stems from missing file-type validation and an absent capability check inside the sendMail function, which permits an authenticated user to place arbitrary files on the server. The issue is tracked as CWE-434 and carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 8.8.
An attacker needs only subscriber-level access and can achieve remote code execution by uploading a malicious file, provided at least one user has previously authenticated through the plugin’s API. The vulnerability is therefore reachable over the network without user interaction once that precondition is met.
EPSS for the CVE rose from a low baseline to a peak of 0.1453 (current value 0.1070), indicating that exploitation interest increased after public disclosure. Wordfence and the plugin’s Trac entries are the primary sources documenting the issue; administrators should apply any available update that removes the unauthenticated code path or restricts the sendMail handler.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Requiring identifiable owners for portable devices reduces the attack surface for unrestricted uploads of dangerous file types via anonymous media.
Dangerous file uploads can be detonated in the chamber to determine malice before any production write or execution occurs.
Prevents unrestricted writing of arbitrary or malicious firmware by keeping hardware write-protect enabled except under tightly controlled manual procedures.
Scans files from external sources on download/open/execute, blocking unrestricted uploads of dangerous file types.
