Published: 26 September 2024
Summary
CVE-2024-8126 is a high-severity Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type (CWE-434) vulnerability in Advancedfilemanager Advanced File Manager. Its CVSS base score is 7.5 (High).
Operationally, ranked in the top 6.2% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
The Advanced File Manager plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file uploads via the class_fma_connector.php file in all versions up to and including 5.2.8. The issue, tracked as CWE-434, allows improper restriction of file uploads and carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.5 reflecting a network vector, high attack complexity, low privileges, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Authenticated attackers who possess at least Subscriber-level access and have been granted specific permissions by an Administrator can exploit the flaw to upload a new .htaccess file. This change subsequently permits the upload of arbitrary files to the server, which may enable remote code execution on the affected WordPress site.
The referenced Wordfence advisory and WordPress plugin trac changeset 3157713 document the availability of a fix that addresses the connector file handling; site administrators should apply the latest plugin version beyond 5.2.8. The associated EPSS score has remained flat at 0.1167 with no material increase since disclosure.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Requiring identifiable owners for portable devices reduces the attack surface for unrestricted uploads of dangerous file types via anonymous media.
Dangerous file uploads can be detonated in the chamber to determine malice before any production write or execution occurs.
Prevents unrestricted writing of arbitrary or malicious firmware by keeping hardware write-protect enabled except under tightly controlled manual procedures.
Scans files from external sources on download/open/execute, blocking unrestricted uploads of dangerous file types.
