Summary

CVE-2024-8522 is a critical-severity SQL Injection (CWE-89) vulnerability in Thimpress Learnpress. Its CVSS base score is 10.0 (Critical).

Operationally, ranked in the top 0.5% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

The LearnPress WordPress LMS plugin is affected by a SQL injection vulnerability in all versions through 4.2.7. The flaw exists in the /wp-json/learnpress/v1/courses REST API endpoint, where the c_only_fields parameter is insufficiently escaped and the underlying SQL query lacks prepared-statement handling, allowing an attacker to alter query logic.

Unauthenticated remote attackers can supply crafted input to this endpoint and append arbitrary SQL clauses to existing queries. Successful exploitation enables extraction of sensitive data from the WordPress database and, given the CVSS 10.0 rating, potentially broader impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Public references document a fix released in version 4.2.7.1 that updates the LP_REST_Courses_V1_Controller class to address the parameter handling. The Wordfence advisory and plugin changelog both identify this release as resolving the issue.

EPSS scores have remained elevated near 0.87 since disclosure, indicating sustained exploitation interest without a documented low-to-high trajectory.
