Summary
CVE-2024-9307 is a critical-severity Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type (CWE-434) vulnerability in Themelooks Mfolio. Its CVSS base score is 9.9 (Critical).
Operationally, ranked in the top 7.7% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
The mFolio Lite plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file uploads because of a missing capability check in all versions through 1.2.1. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2024-9307 and assigned CWE-434, permits authenticated users to upload SVG files containing executable scripts or arbitrary EXE binaries to the server.
An attacker with Author-level access or higher can exploit the issue over the network without user interaction. Successful exploitation allows injection of web scripts that execute in the context of any visitor who accesses the uploaded SVG, or placement of EXE files that may enable remote code execution if the attacker can later invoke them or persuade a visitor to download and run them. The vulnerability carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.9.
A fix is available in the WordPress plugin repository; the referenced changeset updates the mfolio-lite trunk to address the missing authorization check. Site administrators should update to the patched release and review existing uploads for unauthorized files.
EPSS scores for the CVE remain low, with a current value of 0.0796 and a peak of 0.0816.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Requiring identifiable owners for portable devices reduces the attack surface for unrestricted uploads of dangerous file types via anonymous media.
Dangerous file uploads can be detonated in the chamber to determine malice before any production write or execution occurs.
Prevents unrestricted writing of arbitrary or malicious firmware by keeping hardware write-protect enabled except under tightly controlled manual procedures.
Scans files from external sources on download/open/execute, blocking unrestricted uploads of dangerous file types.
