CVE-2026-45728 is a high-severity Generation of Error Message Containing Sensitive Information (CWE-209) vulnerability. Its CVSS base score is 7.5 (High).
Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique Default Accounts (T1078.001); ranked at the 23th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to CM-2 (Baseline Configuration) and CM-6 (Configuration Settings) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

Vulnerability Data
Algernon is a small self-contained pure-Go web server. Prior to 1.17.7, when Algernon is invoked with a single file path instead of a directory, singleFileMode is set to true and debugMode is forcibly enabled. debugMode activates the PrettyError renderer, which…

on any Lua or template error response dumps the absolute path of the file that errored, complete byte contents of that file, and exception or parser error text. This response is served with HTTP 200 OK to whoever sent the request that triggered the error. Any client able to reach the server and able to provoke a runtime error in the served script obtains the full server-side source of that script and of any sibling Lua data file consulted during the request. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.17.7.

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI
si-11 directly requires error messages to avoid revealing exploitable information about the system or its data.
Baseline configuration directly requires documenting and maintaining secure initial settings instead of insecure defaults.
Configuration settings mandate the most restrictive values be applied at initialization, eliminating reliance on insecure factory defaults.
Developer testing and static analysis locate hard-coded sensitive values before code is deployed.
Enforces access so that source containing embedded secrets cannot be reached by unauthorized parties.
Least privilege reduces the blast radius of any insecure default permissions that remain after initialization.
Mitigating Controls (NIST CSF 2.0) AI
Derived directly from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry via our AI-authored CWE→CSF cross-walk (authority under review) — links open the control.
Hardened baselines and configuration management directly replace insecure defaults with secure settings.
Secure SDLC practices directly require sanitized error handling to prevent sensitive data disclosure.
Pre-acquisition integrity checks can reject products known to ship with insecure defaults.
Mitigating Controls (ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Annex A) AI
Derived directly from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry via our AI-authored CWE→ISO cross-walk (authority under review) — links open the control.
Directly restricts access to source code, preventing exposure of embedded sensitive information.
Secure coding standards explicitly forbid exposing sensitive data in errors.
Security testing can detect error messages that leak sensitive information.
Configuration management can disable or remove debug features through hardened baselines.
Classification helps identify source code containing sensitive data so it can be protected.
Access control limits who can view or retrieve source code that may contain secrets.
