Summary

CVE-2022-20615 is a medium-severity Cross-site Scripting (CWE-79) vulnerability in Jenkins Matrix Project. Its CVSS base score is 5.4 (Medium).

Operationally, ranked in the top 13.4% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

Jenkins Matrix Project Plugin 1.19 and earlier contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability because it fails to escape HTML metacharacters in node and label names as well as label descriptions. The affected component is the Jenkins Matrix Project Plugin used within Jenkins continuous-integration environments.

Attackers who possess Agent/Configure permission can supply crafted values that are stored and later rendered in the Jenkins UI, allowing them to execute arbitrary script in the context of other users' browsers and potentially alter build configurations or exfiltrate data.

The Jenkins security advisory published on 2022-01-12 and the corresponding Openwall disclosure recommend upgrading the Matrix Project Plugin to a version that performs proper escaping; Oracle's April 2022 CPU also references the fix for downstream products that embed the plugin.

EPSS for this CVE rose from a low baseline to a peak of 0.1278 on 2026-01-13 before receding to the current value of 0.0289, indicating a period of increased exploitation interest after disclosure.
