Summary

CVE-2022-23108 is a medium-severity Cross-site Scripting (CWE-79) vulnerability in Jenkins Badge. Its CVSS base score is 5.4 (Medium).

Operationally, ranked at the 42.7th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

Jenkins Badge Plugin 1.9 and earlier contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability because it neither escapes badge descriptions nor restricts allowed protocols during badge creation. The affected component is the Badge Plugin for Jenkins, which processes user-supplied badge content without proper output encoding or protocol validation.

Attackers holding Item/Configure permission can supply a malicious badge description containing script or disallowed protocol content. When the badge is later rendered, the injected payload executes in the context of other users viewing the affected Jenkins item, enabling theft of session tokens or other actions within the Jenkins UI.

The Jenkins security advisory published on 2022-01-12 and the corresponding oss-security mailing list posting recommend upgrading the Badge Plugin to a version that performs proper escaping and protocol checks. Administrators are advised to apply the fix promptly and review existing badges for unexpected content.

EPSS for this CVE rose from a low baseline to a peak of 0.1639 before receding to the current value of 0.0021, indicating a period of increased exploitation interest well after initial disclosure.
