Summary

CVE-2022-46684 is a medium-severity Cross-site Scripting (CWE-79) vulnerability in Jenkins Checkmarx. Its CVSS base score is 5.4 (Medium).

Operationally, ranked in the top 7.2% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

The vulnerability is a stored cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) affecting the Jenkins Checkmarx Plugin in versions 2022.3.3 and earlier. It arises because the plugin does not escape values returned from the Checkmarx service API before inserting them into generated HTML reports, allowing malicious content to persist in those reports.

An attacker with low-privileged Jenkins access could supply or manipulate data via the Checkmarx API so that the unescaped values execute arbitrary script in the browsers of other users who view the affected reports, resulting in limited impacts to confidentiality and integrity as reflected in the CVSS 5.4 rating.

The official Jenkins security advisory published on 2022-12-07 addresses the issue under SECURITY-2869 and directs administrators to update the Checkmarx Plugin to a fixed release that properly escapes the API responses.

The associated EPSS score reached a modest peak of 0.1037 before receding to the current value of 0.0898, without evidence of widespread exploitation.
