CVE-2024-1813
Published: 09 April 2024
Summary
CVE-2024-1813 is a critical-severity Deserialization of Untrusted Data (CWE-502) vulnerability in Presstigers Simple Job Board. Its CVSS base score is 9.8 (Critical).
Operationally, ranked in the top 7.7% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
The Simple Job Board plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to PHP Object Injection in all versions through 2.11.0. The flaw stems from unsafe deserialization of untrusted input inside the job_board_applicant_list_columns_value function (CWE-502), allowing an attacker-supplied serialized object to be instantiated when an application is processed.
Unauthenticated attackers can supply a crafted job application that triggers the deserialization when an administrator later views the submission. If a usable property-oriented programming (POP) chain exists from another plugin or theme on the site, the attacker can achieve arbitrary file deletion, sensitive-data disclosure, or remote code execution, consistent with the CVSS 9.8 rating that reflects network-exploitable impact without authentication or user interaction.
Public references point to a patched release published via the WordPress plugin repository (changeset 3051715). Site owners should update to the current version of Simple Job Board; the EPSS score has remained flat at 0.08 with no material post-disclosure increase.

PHP Object. If a POP chain is present via an additional plugin or theme installed on the target system, it could allow the attacker to delete arbitrary files, retrieve sensitive data, or execute code when a submitted job application is viewed.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Penetration testing supplies malicious serialized objects, detecting unsafe deserialization and supporting corrective actions.
Evaluation of untrusted data handling (deserialization testing) reveals unsafe processing, which the required remediation process addresses.
Untrusted serialized data can be deserialized and observed inside the chamber, blocking gadget-chain exploitation outside the sandbox.
Validates or rejects untrusted serialized data before deserialization occurs.
Identifies and blocks malicious code introduced through deserialization of untrusted data at system boundaries.
Integrity verification of serialized information can detect tampering before deserialization occurs.
Provenance of associated data allows detection of untrusted sources before deserialization or processing occurs.
