Summary

CVE-2024-37888 is a medium-severity Cross-site Scripting (CWE-79) vulnerability in Mlewand Open Link. Its CVSS base score is 6.1 (Medium).

Operationally, ranked in the top 4.3% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

Deeper analysis

The vulnerability is a cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) in the Open Link CKEditor plugin, which adds a context-menu option to open links in a new tab. It affects all installations running versions prior to 1.0.5 and stems from insufficient sanitization of the href attribute on links, allowing arbitrary JavaScript execution when the plugin processes the link.

An unauthenticated remote attacker can supply a crafted link containing a malicious href value. When a victim user interacts with the link via the plugin's context menu, the injected script executes in the context of the editor's page, enabling limited confidentiality and integrity impacts with changed scope.

The public GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-rhxf-gvmh-hrxm recommends upgrading to version 1.0.5 or later to address the issue. The associated EPSS score has remained flat at 0.2064 since disclosure, indicating no material increase in observed exploitation interest.
