CVE-2024-7703
Published: 17 August 2024
Summary
CVE-2024-7703 is a medium-severity Cross-site Scripting (CWE-79) vulnerability in Wordpress (inferred from references). Its CVSS base score is 6.4 (Medium).
Operationally, ranked in the top 2.3% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
The ARMember Membership Plugin for WordPress, in versions through 4.0.37, contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability (CWE-79) that arises when SVG files are uploaded without adequate input sanitization or output escaping. The affected component is the plugin’s file-handling logic, which permits SVG content containing scripts to be stored and later served to users.
Authenticated attackers holding Subscriber or higher privileges can upload a crafted SVG file and thereby inject arbitrary JavaScript that executes in the browser of any visitor who subsequently accesses the file. The attack requires no user interaction beyond viewing the uploaded content and yields a CVSS 6.4 rating reflecting limited impact on confidentiality and integrity across security contexts.
Public references point to a WordPress Trac changeset (3136475) that addresses the issue, and the plugin’s changelog and Wordfence advisory both indicate that updating to a version newer than 4.0.37 removes the vulnerable code paths. The EPSS score has remained flat at its recorded peak of 0.4472 with no material increase after disclosure.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Penetration testing submits XSS payloads to web applications, detecting cross-site scripting flaws for subsequent remediation.
Validates web inputs to reject script-related content that could produce XSS.
Output validation against expected content can reject or sanitize script content in generated web pages, reducing XSS exploitability.
