Deeper analysis

A PHP object injection vulnerability exists in SugarCRM versions prior to 6.5.24, 6.7.13, 7.5.2.5, 7.6.2.2, and 7.7.1.0. It stems from improper validation of PHP serialized input in the SugarRestSerialize.php script, where the rest_data parameter is passed directly to the unserialize() function without sanitization. This is tracked as CWE-502 and carries a CVSS 4.0 score of 9.3.

An unauthenticated attacker can submit crafted serialized data containing malicious object declarations via the affected REST endpoint, resulting in arbitrary code execution within the application context. The vulnerability affects any deployment exposing the SugarCRM REST interface, and prior vendor remediation in advisory sugarcrm-sa-2016-001 proved incomplete.

Public references, including archived SugarCRM advisories sugarcrm-sa-2016-001 and sugarcrm-sa-2016-008 plus subsequent analyses, document the incomplete patch and list updated version numbers that close the remaining deserialization vectors.
