Summary

CVE-2026-107838 is a high-severity Unchecked Return Value (CWE-252) vulnerability. Its CVSS base score is 7.5 (High).

Operationally, exploitation aligns with the MITRE ATT&CK technique Exploitation for Privilege Escalation (T1068); ranked at the 25th percentile by exploit likelihood (below the median); it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

The strongest mitigations our analysis identified map to SA-11 (Developer Testing and Evaluation) and SA-15 (Development Process, Standards, and Tools) — see the control section below for these in your framework.

Vulnerability Data

RIOT is an open-source microcontroller operating system designed for Internet of Things devices and other embedded systems. From version 2023.07 through version 2026.07, nanocoap_fileserver callers in sys/net/application_layer/nanocoap/fileserver.c ignore a failure returned by _resp_init() when coap_build_reply() cannot fit a response header…

into the response buffer. A remote client can send a CoAP request with a sufficiently large extended token when nanocoap_token_ext is enabled, causing response initialization to fail while _get_file() or _get_directory() continues with stale response state. The path then reaches _calc_szx2() and its pdu->payload_len > reserve assertion, terminating the affected service or device task. No fixed release is available as of this review.

Mitigating Controls

Mitigating Controls (NIST 800-53 r5) AI

Developer testing and code evaluation can discover instances where return values are ignored.

Requiring a documented development process and coding standards can mandate explicit checking of all function return values.

Security engineering principles discourage use of assertions for handling untrusted input.

Validating untrusted inputs structurally prevents attacker data from reaching and triggering assertions.
