CVE-2023-36825
Published: 11 July 2023
Summary
CVE-2023-36825 is a critical-severity Deserialization of Untrusted Data (CWE-502) vulnerability in Orchid Platform. Its CVSS base score is 9.6 (Critical).
Operationally, ranked in the top 8.3% of CVEs by exploit likelihood; it is not currently listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
Deeper analysis
Orchid, a Laravel package used to build back-office applications, admin panels, and dashboards, is affected by a deserialization vulnerability in versions 14.0.0-alpha4 through 14.4.x. The flaw arises from unsafe processing of untrusted data supplied via the _state query parameter and is tracked as CWE-502. It carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.6, reflecting network attack vector, low complexity, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability with changed scope.
An unauthenticated remote attacker can supply a crafted _state value that triggers object deserialization, resulting in arbitrary code execution on the server. The attack requires user interaction to deliver the malicious link or request but needs no prior credentials, allowing an adversary to fully compromise the affected application and underlying host.
The vendor advisory and release notes for version 14.5.0 state that the issue is resolved by the patch included in that release and all subsequent versions. No workarounds are documented.
The associated EPSS score has remained flat at 0.0711 with no material increase since disclosure.

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.
Penetration testing supplies malicious serialized objects, detecting unsafe deserialization and supporting corrective actions.
Evaluation of untrusted data handling (deserialization testing) reveals unsafe processing, which the required remediation process addresses.
Untrusted serialized data can be deserialized and observed inside the chamber, blocking gadget-chain exploitation outside the sandbox.
Validates or rejects untrusted serialized data before deserialization occurs.
Identifies and blocks malicious code introduced through deserialization of untrusted data at system boundaries.
Integrity verification of serialized information can detect tampering before deserialization occurs.
Provenance of associated data allows detection of untrusted sources before deserialization or processing occurs.
