Deeper analysis

CVE-2023-51624 is a stack-based buffer overflow in the RTSP server component of D-Link DCS-8300LHV2 IP cameras. The flaw occurs in ValidateAuthorizationHeader when processing the Authorization header on TCP port 554; the code copies attacker-controlled data into a fixed-length stack buffer without validating its length. The vulnerability is tracked as ZDI-CAN-20072, is assigned CWE-121 and CWE-787, and carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 8.8.

Network-adjacent attackers require no authentication or user interaction to trigger the overflow and can execute arbitrary code in the root context. Exploitation is possible simply by sending a crafted RTSP request containing an oversized Authorization header value.

D-Link advisory SAP10370 and Zero Day Initiative advisory ZDI-24-044 address the issue. The EPSS score has remained flat at 0.0528 with no material rise since disclosure.

exists within the handling of the Authorization header by the RTSP server, which listens on TCP port 554. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a fixed-length stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of root. Was ZDI-CAN-20072.
