Deeper analysis

CVE-2024-34665 is an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the H.264 parsing logic of librtppayload.so on Samsung devices. It affects builds prior to the October 2024 Security Maintenance Release (SMR) and is assigned CWE-787. The flaw carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.5 with a network attack vector, high attack complexity, and no privileges required.

Remote attackers can trigger the issue to achieve arbitrary code execution with system-level privileges. Successful exploitation requires user interaction, such as processing a malicious media stream or file containing crafted H.264 content.

Samsung’s October 2024 security bulletin addresses the issue by updating librtppayload.so in SMR Oct-2024 Release 1; devices should be updated to that release or later to eliminate the vulnerable code path. The associated EPSS score has remained flat at 0.0510 with no observed increase after disclosure.
