Vulnerability details

ssrfcheck is a library that checks if a string contains a potential SSRF attack. In 1.3.0 and earlier, ssrfcheck fails to block Server-Side Request Forgery attacks when the target private IP address is encoded as an IPv4-mapped IPv6 address (e.g.…

http://[::ffff:127.0.0.1]/). The WHATWG URL parser built into Node.js silently normalizes the IPv4 notation inside the brackets to compressed hex form ([::ffff:7f00:1]) before the library's private-IP regex ever runs. The regex was written to match dot-notation only and therefore never matches any real input — all seven IANA private IPv4 ranges, including the AWS/GCP/Azure metadata address 169.254.169.254, are bypassed. Any application using isSSRFSafeURL() to guard HTTP requests made with user-supplied URLs is fully exposed to SSRF.

T1190 Exploit Public-Facing Application Initial Access
Adversaries may attempt to exploit a weakness in an Internet-facing host or system to initially access a network.
T1552.005 Cloud Instance Metadata API Credential Access
Adversaries may attempt to access the Cloud Instance Metadata API to collect credentials and other sensitive data.
Why these techniques?

SSRF bypass directly enables exploitation of public-facing apps (T1190) and access to cloud metadata APIs (T1552.005).

Mitigating Controls

Likely Mitigating Controls AI

Per-CVE control mapping for this CVE has not run yet; the list below is derived from the weakness types (CWEs) cited in the NVD entry.

addresses: CWE-918

Penetration testing attempts server-side requests to internal resources, identifying SSRF weaknesses for remediation.

addresses: CWE-918

Outbound connections to external resources can be monitored and limited at the boundary, reducing SSRF impact.

addresses: CWE-918

Validates server-side URLs and resource references to block SSRF attempts.

addresses: CWE-918

Detects server-side request forgery through monitoring of unexpected outbound connections.

addresses: CWE-184

Spam filters rely on evolving blacklists, signatures, and heuristics of disallowed message patterns; keeping them updated per the control directly mitigates incomplete disallowed-input lists.
